Unique Closet
Now entering its third year with a total donation of $300,000, Unique
Thrift Store's Unique Closet Program helps Montgomery County's
underprivileged residents obtain the clothing and household items they need,
free of charge, while maintaining their sense of dignity. The Program is
administered through Unique Thrift Store's partnerships with the Montgomery
County government and various non-profit organizations. In December 2007,
Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett joined Unique Thrift Store owner
Dave Kloeber to announce the store's donation of $100,000 to "kick off" the
Unique Closet Program. Since its inception, the program has been a huge
success helping more than 80 Montgomery county organizations--- 57 of which
are Montgomery County public schools.
Here's how the Unique Closet Program works:
- Unique Closet provides gift certificates to a provider, such as a Montgomery County school, social service agency or non-profit organization. The provider decides which clients receive the certificates and when they are distributed.
- Providers have used the certificates in a variety of ways including:
- Incentive for clients who reach certain goals
- Taking clients shopping for career clothes
- Purchasing household goods such as bedding, dishes, glasses, pots and pans for clients moving into new homes
- Providing much-needed clothing for underprivileged students
- Helping young mothers obtain the necessary clothing and furniture for their children.
